Annexation Ranking

Annexation Ranking

Postby Americalex » Nov 13, 2013 8:44 pm

Here is the new measure by which a person's status in determined in relation to the annexation proposition:

Supporter
Supports the idea of uniting our nations, at least in principle.

Opponent
Opposes the idea of uniting our nations, even in principle.

Observer
Isn't opposed to or supportive of the idea of uniting our nations.

From now on users gain a number of stars as any good armchair general should have, based on the total number of posts made on the forums.

Over 90 = 1 star
Over 450 = 2 stars
Over 900 = 3 stars
Over 4,500 = 4 stars
Over 9,000 = 5 stars

But are you really opposed even in principle? Categorically against any notion of uniting no matter the conditions, on the basis that our nations are diametrically fundamentally incompatible?

Believe it or not I was looking into the available options when it comes to merging users for phpbb. There are some plug-ins but nothing alleluyah especially considering my limited skills.

I'm not sure thats what I would consider "in principle".

Then a Supporter, in principle, could be for uniting no matter the cost or conditions.

I would consider myself a supporter of the status quo. The current arrangement is pretty good. A cost/benefit analysis in my mind favours the "status quo" over a "union". And I think it will hold true in my mind into the foreseeable future. I'm good with "Opponent" status so long as the status implies a rational opposition.

So you think that Americans are too different from Canadians for you to ever support or not oppose a merger our nations?

Not "ever". A near cataclysmic event where the very existence of Canada and/or the USA was fated on a merger, then I'd change my mind.

I think we're quite similar to Americans but different enough. I'm taking a selfish position here. The arguments for annexation all these years have failed to convince me that I'd be better off in a union with America. I'm not a bystander thats for sure, I am an Opponent.

What were these arguments? I'd be curious to hear them. And in your opinion, are Americans more similar to Quebecers or more different, relative to English-Canadians like yourself? Do you think that your relatively recent German ancestry is a factor in you "not feeling brotherly" towards Americans? Well, I'm glad you are able to express your opposition clearly thanks to this new ranking system. It's important for guests to be able to see what kind of attitude and reasoning opponents have when it comes to opposing this prospect for the future of our nations. Haters gonna hate, I know! lol

I'm not sure what magnitude of selfish you are referring to, but being an Albertan resident I suspect that you are talking "as an individual because you don't care the negative impacts the border has on other Canadians as long as it doesn't affect you personally", since it was just on the CBC news today that the U.S. is about to become the largest oil supplier in the world, which will make selling Tar Sand oil to them much harder and that it would affect the quality of life of Albertans and the rest of Canada significantly as a result of this looming American energy independence.

Quebecors in general are more open to political change because, rightly or wrongly, many perceive almost any change is better than the status quo. Over the years I have heard many ideas of how Quebec could exist in North America. I don't think there is a unified opinion on how Quebecors think they should proceed. And I do believe the majority would prefer to stay in Canada but "not at all costs". English Canada is not perfect. We all need to work on making Canada a more perfect dominion :P

In no way do I consider myself a German. I am a Canadian. I trace my heritage to various parts of Europe as I'm sure you do as well.

And my American friends do as well. We all have a common heritage. Does that mean a merger will improve my or any Canadians life? I don't think it does.

More energy is not a bad thing for Canada, no matter where in the world it comes from. Canadians will benefit from cheaper energy and so will Americans. Canada will also benefit when Americans are hired. The more disposable income Americans have the better off Canada will be. Canada has plenty of commodities for sale, not just oil. I'm not worried in the slightest of a booming American economy. We will benefit with or without being merged.

So having significantly more access to a diversity of consumer goods (around 100% more), significantly lower prices on the exact same goods (around 20% in most cases), and significantly higher disposable income (around 20% in most cases) wouldn't improve your life or the life of any Canadian -even a few- in your opinion? I see.

The border protects me in other ways. Materially, life is good in Canada. An inch better is not enough to sacrifice our sovereignty.

I'm sure stock holders and investors would improve greatly over a merger. So yes a few would improve.

In what ways does the border protect you that outweighs all the negatives of having a border, in your cost-analysis of things?

How many active members does the forum boast?

The border is where US law ends and Canadian law begins. I prefer Canadian federal law thank you very much.

So Alex, what wouldn't you do for Canada and USA to merge?

I'd say around 10 at the moment, but you can't expect everybody who once participated to spend all their lives here, once people have said their piece, most move on and that's perfectly normal. I know you're hoping to kill the forums and get me to quit one day, but for me it's not looking so bleak as you think: the old website has not been getting much traffic because of the lack of SEO: I had utterly/completely ignored both the internal and external SEO considerations.

This will all change, now that I'm implementing a strategic uplift of the entire project that will really -once it is fully implemented- put the website where it needs to be in terms of visibility and traffic. I wonder if you will still be around by then, you have hardened a lot in your views and I honestly didn't believe you were so hostile to the idea, I guess you must have experienced a relapse. I think Alberta is brushing up on you, it is the most Annexation averse province afterall.

Even Herbie, who is active albeit he never posts, once said that he wasn't opposed in principle, supposing enough upgrades were done to the U.S. system to make it attractive. Same thing with Benz, who said he is sympathetic if it is a new confederation of some kind. As it turns out, you're part of the more hardcore opponents like Nickel, who would have thought! And to answer your question: I support a sovereign annexation, check the subtitles of the homepage for definitions.

By the way, when you say sovereignty what you mean is independence, I understand that people of your mentality tend to dumb down things by assigning the same meaning to different words, but the fact of the manner is, Canadians would remain sovereign whether Canada remains an independent country or whether it merges with the United States which is another sovereign country, this is an incontrovertible fact.

I'm not dumbing things down. I just sometimes can't think of a better word. You're so pretentious sometimes.

Are you hostile to all Opponents? Do you work from the premise that all Opponents are "socialist", "of that mentality" (complete idiots), or otherwise hold prejudices against annexation Opponents?

I like the redesign of the website but the content is a decade old. You're still using old polls that were questionable at the time they were taken. You have painted a history of an annexation movement through a rosy lens, as if it was semi-popular in some glory age. But it wasn't.

I'll stick around so long as this place remains an interesting weird little corner of the internet.

You're just scared of the possibility that the facts are correct and so you feel compelled to piss all over them because you can't stand the very notion that this proposition might take off and become mainstream one day.

You could show your good faith by reaching out to Nickel and Vicomte13. I think the time is ripe for a reboot of relations with Russia lol With the new website and everything, perhaps a new beginning might be possible when it comes to them participating without atomic explosions detonating on the threads everywhere all the time.
