Suharto was the guy demanding all this police state security measures as far as I know. NO official release of the name of Suharto. I think Chretien was going loopy in his head back in 97. Otherwise, he seems to be a pragmatic man. Giving a free pass to Indonesian regime is not pragmatic as far as I am concerned.

I should clarify what I said about Cretin. He was good at governance. I generally liked his stance on constitutional rights (such as they are in Canada). Outside of work, he was a nutbar though. Not sure where this came from.

Chretien mocking the custom of the Japanese Tea Ceremony during the APEC summit held at Osaka, Japan in November 1995. The tea ceremony is about harmony, respect, and purification. I guess he thought being an ass - clown was in there somewhere.
