May 1982, BBC Television announcer:

"In the course of its duties, within the Total Exclusion Zone around the Falkland Islands, HMS Sheffield, a Type 42 Destroyer; was attacked and hit late this afternoon by an Argentine missile. The ship caught fire, which spread out of control. It is feared that there have been a number of casualties, but we have no details of them yet. Next of kin will be informed first as soon as details are received."

Just to be a picky cranky old bastard, The museum tag should say USS Franklin, and the hull classification symbol should be there as well. My $.02. I see incorrect tags in military museums in Canada and it always pisses me off that many of them have glaring mistakes that are slow to be corrected. The Army Museum in Halifax is bad for this. The Shearwater Aviation Museum is actually pretty good in this regard.

If a poet has any obligation toward society, it is to write well. Being in the minority, he has no other choice. Failing this duty, he sinks into oblivion. Society, on the other hand, has no obligation toward the poet. A majority by definition, society thinks of itself as having other options than reading verses, no matter how well written. Its failure to do so results in its sinking to that level of locution at which society falls easy prey to a demagogue or a tyrant. This is society's own equivalent of oblivion.

“The truth is Canada is a cloud-cuckoo-land, an insufferably rich country governed by idiots, its self-made problems offering comic relief to the ills of the real world out there, where famine and racial strife and vandals in office are the unhappy rule.”

Incidentally, the arrival of this Division or elements of it unheralded on this front is a pretty poor chit for our higher intelligence organisation. I sent in a long letter the other day setting out my views on the amount of money and manpower we are wasting on these hush-hush organizations and which, so far as I am concerned, produce nothing useful.

Quote of Lieutenant General Jeoffrey Scoones, Commander of IV corps, around the time of the Battles of Imphal. V-Force, an Allied intelligence organization, failed to provide useful information on the upcoming Japanese U-Go Offensive.
